Tools, writing and artwork about how good places get made.
I’m Noah Demarest. For the last 30+ years I’ve been designing high-performance homes and landscapes around the Finger Lakes. This site is where I share what I’ve picked up along the way: essays on architecture, design and art, my own artwork, free calculators that make the building code less of a maze, and step-by-step tutorials. Everything here is copyrighted but free to use.
Clear thinking, careful hands, and a little generosity.

See all tools →I’m a registered architect and landscape architect. I’ve served on the City of Ithaca Planning Board, the Village of Trumansburg Board of Zoning Appeals, and was one of the lead consultants on the Ithaca Energy Code Supplement, so I spend a lot of time where design, code and community meet. The tools here started as things I built for my own projects, and they’re shared in case they save you some time too.
